What a CP42 Commercial Kitchen Inspection Covers

A CP42 is the industry gas safety record for commercial catering. It comes in two parts: the kitchen as a whole, and each gas appliance in it.

Part 1: The Kitchen Environment

Gas supply and emergency isolation, gas tightness of the pipework, ventilation and extraction, and the gas interlock that shuts off the gas if the extraction stops.

Part 2: Every Gas Appliance

Ranges, ovens, fryers, griddles, chargrills, bratt pans, combi steamers and water boilers are each checked for safe operation, flame supervision, burner condition and correct gas pressure.

A Clear Record You Can Show

Any faults are explained in plain terms. Anything unsafe is labelled and, if dangerous, turned off until it is repaired. You keep the completed CP42 for inspections, insurers and audits.

Frequently Asked Questions

CP42 is the industry form used to record a gas safety inspection of a commercial catering kitchen. Part 1 covers the kitchen environment, including gas isolation, ventilation, extraction and the gas interlock. Part 2 covers each gas appliance. It is completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for commercial catering.

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require businesses to keep gas appliances, flues and pipework in a safe condition. The CP42 is the standard way to record that this has been checked. HSE guidance for catering treats an annual inspection by a Gas Safe registered engineer as a reasonable minimum, and Environmental Health Officers and insurers commonly ask to see a current gas safety record.

Most commercial kitchens have a CP42 inspection every year, which is the minimum HSE guidance treats as reasonable. Busy kitchens may also need appliance servicing in between, following the manufacturers' instructions.

The installation standard BS 6173 requires gas appliances to be interlocked with the mechanical ventilation in new and upgraded commercial kitchens, so the gas shuts off if the extraction stops. HSE guidance says the standard is not retrospective, so older kitchens without an interlock should be assessed by a Gas Safe engineer. Fitting an interlock is often the recommended fix.

The price depends on how many gas appliances you have, whether there is an interlock to test, and whether any remedial work is needed. Call 0161 526 5588 or request support with a list of your appliances and we will give you a clear quote before we attend.

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer who holds commercial catering qualifications. Check the back of the engineer's Gas Safe ID card: it lists the types of gas work they are qualified for. A domestic-only engineer cannot inspect commercial catering equipment.

The engineer explains the fault and labels the appliance. If it is dangerous it will be turned off until it is repaired. We can usually quote for the repair on the day, and once the work is done the appliance is re-checked and recorded.

We are based in Denton, Manchester, and carry out CP42 inspections across Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Warrington, Bolton, Preston and the wider North West, including multi-site restaurant, pub and hotel groups.

Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, and do not use electrical switches or naked flames. Do not turn the gas back on until a Gas Safe registered engineer has made it safe.

No. A CP12 is the landlord gas safety record used for rented homes. A CP42 is the gas safety record for commercial catering kitchens, covering both the kitchen environment and each gas appliance, and it is completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for commercial catering.

The main ones are the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, which require gas appliances, flues and pipework to be kept in a safe condition and worked on only by Gas Safe registered engineers, and the installation standard BS 6173, which covers commercial catering appliances including the gas interlock with mechanical ventilation. HSE guidance for catering treats an annual inspection as a reasonable minimum.

Yes. We carry out CP42 inspections and commercial gas safety checks in Warrington and across Cheshire, as well as Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and the wider North West.
